Philosophy meeting in english: social influence

We are constantly subjected to social influence, be it interpersonal influence, mass media influence or persuasion. In most cases, this influence has no or little effect on us. However, in some case, this influence can be profound, leading to significant changes in behavior, beliefs and attitudes.

What determines whether or not a particular influence attempt will be successful? How can we know when our choices are guided by our free will, and when they are shaped by overwhelming situational forces?

When does typical and usual psychological pressure become extraordinary and unfair, or too forceful for the average person to resist? And can an individual be said to have lost their freedom to resist or to flee in a situation in which physical restraint is totally absent?
